Parent Meeting Recap

Jordan Kuper

Hello Parents!

For those that couldn’t make it to the parent meeting at Wulf last night, here are some highlights.  Coach Jordan said to please reach out to him with questions, but you can also reach out to any of the board members or ambassadors.  Those individuals can be found on the team website under the “team information” and “resources” sections respectively.

Practice schedule for summer and fall:

-  The practice schedule has shifted slightly for the coming season due to EPRD changing swim lesson days from Thursday to Tuesday through the summer months

-  The schedule is anticipated to shift back to lessons on Thursday in the Fall

-  High school swim seasons also result in minor time shifts due to loss of lanes for the high school swim teams.

-  Kick starts are anticipated to start soon and be hosted on Fridays from 4-4:30 – more to come as Coach Jordan learns that system.

-  Attendance philosophy by Coach Jordan: he does not have a firm requirement for team participation and hopes the athletes will develop an internal desire to be at practice.  He of course hopes that swimmers are present for all practices.

Category 1 coach Jeff Cook was introduced (Welcome back Jeff!)

-  Jeff previously (until this most recent season) coached the Hurricanes for 10 years

-  He is a schoolteacher in Jefferson County and has a daughter on the team

Meet Schedule:

-  State cuts will be posted to the team website soon.  They can also be found on Colorado Swimming’s site, and I posted them here to Facebook a few weeks ago. Let’s see how many Hurricanes we can get qualified to compete at our state’s highest level of competition!  We already have several swimmers qualified!

-  Home meets!!!  We will be hosting a meet at Wulf September 28th.  This is a fantastic way to compete in our home pool, earn some revenue for our team, and grow interest/support within the Evergreen community.  Participation is expected of ALL Hurricanes.  This meet will require volunteer support to run effectively (reminder: most teams have a strict volunteer requirement as part of team participation).  Volunteer roles will include officials and timers, as well as some other likely roles such as set-up/tear-down, concessions, hospitality, etc.

-  There is a training requirement for people to officiate – though it is a volunteer role that comes with the best seat in the house and a lot of boosted knowledge of the sport.  If you’re interested, please reach out to Jordan and get the training process started.

-  The team’s main championship meet this summer will be June 21-23 at the Air Force Academy.  It is a prelim/final format meet where swimmers 11 and up will swim in a preliminary session in the morning and have the opportunity to make finals and swim again in the evening sessions.  Finals meets are very exciting with lots of energy, music, and pride.  Even if swimmers don’t qualify to swim in finals, it’s a really fun time to come wear green, hang with your friends, and cheer on teammates.  This meet will also be a pseudo-travel meet with a hotel block of rooms down in Colorado Springs and a catered team dinner Saturday night after the finals session.

-  Reminder for all meets: please check out the team website for meet schedule and remember to “commit” your swimmer if you intend to compete by clicking the Attend/Decline button.  Coaches will select events based on strengths/weaknesses, competitive field, and what each swimmer has been working on in practice.  But feel free to comment when you commit if there are any specific needs (i.e., “we need to leave early for a baseball game”).

Fundraisers: Splash and Dash

-  The swimathon was a huge success but now we can look forward to our next big fundraiser: the splash and dash. Thank you Kelly Rothman for such an amazing job cooridnating this fundraiser!!!

-  This is an event co-hosted with EPRD which has the potential to bring revenue to our team (and of course a lot of fun).  The event is July 6th and will include a small open water swim in Buchanan ponds and a run.

-  If anyone is nervous or has questions, please reach out.  It may seem intimidating but is beginner-friendly and will be a lot of fun.

-  Parents, please consider competing with your athletes, or volunteering!
