SUPER SECTIONAL SPEEDO CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES at the University of Texas in Austin:

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Lauren Vilims

EHS 12th Grade

Number of years on the team: 2+4=6

How did you get started swimming competitively? I had tried every other sport in the world and didn't like any of them so my mom signed me up for the Hiwan swim team when I was 8 and then I moved to a year round team and never looked back. I loved swimming and knew it was the sport I wanted to commit to.

Best stroke & best event: My best stroke is probably freestyle and my best event is probably the mile

Greatest swimming achievement: I would say qualifying for sectionals every year in high school and being able to go on amazing swim trips with other very talented athletes.

Best age group memory: I made my first sectional cut at a long course state meet because the girl in the lane next to me in finals told me behind the blocks that I shouldn't feel bad if I couldn't keep up with her. Yeah I sure showed her because I kicked her butt and made my first sectional cut (I also took 3rd!).

What I learned as an age grouper and advice to pass on:  As an age grouper I think the most important thing I learned was that you have to give it your all in prelims in order to make it to finals and to never just assume you will make it in because really prelims are just a race of who wants it more.

Best part of being a senior swimmer: I think the best part is being a role model to the younger swimmers and having that seniority to really give younger kids inspiration and for them to take it seriously. I also really love teasing Bhodi, JC, Ryan and my brother Nick about being underclassmen.

Best memory being a senior swimmer: I would say senior year high school swimming.  I felt like I really bonded with the team this year and I got to be a team captain, which was really cool.

Future Goals / Seasonal or Longer: I really want to finish college and swim all four years. I am committed to University of Northern Iowa so I am really excited. I also have a goal to make a futures cut! (Hopefully this upcoming sectionals.)

What do you do besides swimming: I love to run. I did cross country in the fall which was a really fun experience. I  usually run on Sundays when I am not swimming.  I also love to read and hang out with my friends.
