Evergreen Hurricanes Newsletter April 23, 2010

Congratulations to Coach Nathan and his wife Becky on the arrival of their son, Atticus, on April 7th. We'll hold a spot in Category 1 for him!

Category 2 will be Monday's (5:40-6:00pm) and Wednesday's (4:15-4:40pm).  Category 3 & 4 will be Monday's (4:50-5:20pm), Wednesday (4:30-5:30pm), and Thursday (5:00-5:30pm).  This dryland schedule will be in effect for the whole month of May.

You surely noticed the snazzy blue timers in use at our last meet.  We have upgraded to the Dolphin Timing System, which has a wireless interface with the HyTek meet manager system, and should make it simpler to run our meets. What is different?  The head timer starts all of the stopwatches, so times should be more accurate. Lane timers need only stop their watches when a swimmer finishes.  The times are automatically transmitted to the computer, eliminating the need for timers to record the times and a person to enter the data in the computer. Thanks to Mike Honnick for his work researching and procuring the new system.

We will hold our annual Cosmic Bowling party and short course awards ceremony on Sunday, May 2, following the last home meet.  The party is from 2-5 at Brunswick Zone on Kipling. Please RSVP by Monday, 4/26, by email to Susan Halama at susan@srhwriting.com. Be sure to indicate how many people will be attending!

Participation in this very worthy cause is completely optional but highly encouraged.  Swimmers received a pledge sheet in their folder at the pool.  They can choose any practice during the week of April 26th as their KAB Swim-A-thon practice. Let's see what we can do to help the thousands of families each year that are affected by this disease.  Email questions to Kathy Lahr  at president@evergreenswimteam.org.

On Saturday, May 1, swimmers in Categories 3 & 4 will practice from 9:45 - 12:00 at Meyers Pool in Arvada.

School will be out before you know it!  We switch to our summer schedule on June 1st.  Dryland times for June and July will be posted as soon as they are available.

Category 1: Monday - Friday, 4:00 - 4:45pm
Category 2: Monday - Friday, 4:00 - 5:15pm
Category 3 & 4: Monday - Friday. 5:15 - 7:30pm; Saturdays, 6:30 - 8:30am.
Category 4: Tuesdays, 5:00 -7:00am

The best athletes know that to recover from hard workouts and achieve peak performance, they need to pay attention to good nutrition.  Choose fresh fruit and whole grains whenever you can; make sure you add in some protein to help you sustain your energy.  Some ideas for great post-workout snacks are:

  • Half of a turkey or tuna sandwich on whole-wheat bread
  • Half of a whole wheat bagel with light cream cheese or a slice of low fat cheese
  • Apples, bananas, strawberries (any fruit works - add 1 tablespoon of peanut butter for protein)
  • Carrots and snap peas with hummus
  • Trail mix, dried fruit, or nut mix
  • Energy bars like Clif Bars and Lara Bars

What is your favorite meal to eat before a meet?  Send your ideas to newsletters@evergreenswimteam.org  for the May newsletter by May 15, and you'll receive a peanut butter pretzel Clif Bar!

If your swimmer will be leaving the team for summer, you need to pay a $50 retainer fee to hold his/her space on the roster for the new season which starts in September.  The $50 will be applied to registration fees.

Next deposit of $250 is due on May 5th.

Check the meet entries - if your swimmer is not competing, they are expected to attend and help out.  The volunteer roster will be out soon.  Let's make this meet as big a success as all the others have been this year!
