|Evergreen Hurricanes Newsletter||January 22, 2009
Kara, age 10, swims with Category 2 and has been having an awesome short course season - she won a high point trophy at the November Tops Meet. She has been on the team for four years. Her favorite stroke is butterfly, and her favorite event is the 100 Fly. Kara's goal for the season is to make Zones. To get herself psyched for a meet, she does the Souja Boy dance. Kara's favorite color is green.
SHORT COURSE vs LONG COURSE
Swimming has its own vocabulary, which can be confusing for those new to the sport. What is the difference between the two seasons? Short course season starts in September and culminates with the SC championship meets (Silver State, Senior State, State, and Sectionals) in late February and early March. Short course events are swum in 25-yard pools. Long Course season begins in March, and runs through the LC championship meets (Zone 2, LC State, and Western Zones) in mid to late July and early August. Long course events are swum in 50 meter pools.
We now have 87 swimmers on our roster: 29 in Category 1; 27 in Category 2; and 31 in Category 3. Welcome to the newest team members, all in Category 3: Taylor and Shelby Cusack; Ian Koenigsberg; Craig Fowler; and Sean Story. The updated team roster will be sent to all families in a Team Update email.
The board has begun talking about the summer schedule and fees, and we will publish the information as soon as it is available. Swimmers currently with the team pay only the monthly fees during June and July; there is a separate fee schedule for those who join in summer, which will be posted as soon as it is finalized. The meet schedule is set, and has been posted on the website and distributed to the swimmers. If you are already making plans for summer travel and need more detailed information, ask a board member or Coach Jeff.
TRAVEL MEET PLANS IN THE WORKS
Save the date: June 25 - 28
Coach Jeff is working on plans for a travel meet at the end of June. Swimmers 11 and over will travel with the team and chaperones; those 10 and under will need to have a parent along, or the parent of another swimmer willing to be responsible for them.
Is there something you would like to see in the newsletter? Do you have an idea that you would like to share with the team? Send your suggestions to email@example.com.
On Saturday, January 31, the team will meet at the Bergen Park Cinema to see Inkheart. Time to be determined once the theater schedule is available - probably late morning - watch Coach Jeff's blog for details.
|FEBRUARY SUPERBOWL MEET: Feb 7 and 8
SCHEDULE: Plans for the Superbowl Meet are coming together - lots of you will be happy to note that it does not actually take place on SuperBowl weekend. There will be one session on Saturday. and two sessions on Sunday (the 500s will be swum on Sunday after the conclusion of the morning session.)
VOLUNTEER ROSTER: Diane Belz will be putting together the volunteer schedule and we will post that as soon as possible. Each family will be asked to work two sessions during the weekend to fulfill their volunteer commitment.
CONCESSIONS: We have someone to coordinate purchasing for concessions, but would love someone to come forward to run the show on the weekend. Think about taking this on with a friend. Talk to Susan McDonald or Diane Belz if you are willing to help with this important component of running our meets.
INTERESTED IN BECOMING AN OFFICIAL?
There is a training session this weekend at DU. Contact Kathy Lahr for information- her number is 303-570-8251.
Lindsay Morrow and Lexie Malazdrewicz for making Team Colorado for the All Stars Meet. They traveled to Kansas over the MLK weekend - final results will be available in a couple of weeks. We are proud that the Hurricanes had two swimmers on the All Stars Team. Congratulations!
Kate McDonald also won a high point trophy at the November Tops Meet. Great work, Kate!! (and sorry for leaving that out of the December newsletter)
You can find photos of the Taylor Reeves Meet on the website Photo Gallery. If you are a parent of a 13-18 year old swimmer and a photography buff, we'd love to add your swim meet photos to the website. Our current team photographer has two swimmers in the 12 and under group, which explains why our photo coverage of the older kids is not as extensive. Contact a board member if you are willing to share your expertise.
