Evergreen Hurricanes Newsletter February 20, 2009
SPOTLIGHT ON:
Nino Delany

Nino Delany has been with the team for three years and recently moved up to Category 2.  His favorite stroke is butterfly, and his favorite event is the 200 Free.  He has achieved his goal for the season, which was to make Silver State, qualifying in the 200 Free, 50 Back, 50 Free, and 50 Fly! Nino says he has been looking at the Silver State qualifying times before each meet to get himself psyched.  His favorite color is green, and he moved to Colorado in 2005. Nino is one of several Hurricanes lucky enough to have a sibling on the team - his brother Nick swims in Category 1.

TO TAPER or NOT TO TAPER?
And, what does that mean, anyway?  Read the article on tapering that Coach Jeff posted on his blog to find out.

TREASURER'S CORNER
We installed a lock box at the pool so you can have your swimmers drop off monthly payments.  It is in the back corner by Coach Jeff's table.  Please note that all payments are due by the 15th of the month. As of April 1st, we will be increasing the late payment fee to $25 for payments received after the 15th.  If you have questions about your payments, please contact Caryn Pearson at pearsoncabin@earthlink.net
TRAVEL MEET:
June 24 - July 1, Sarasota, Florida
Monday, Feb 24th is the deadline to confirm a spot for your swimmer on the travel meet, and to make your first payment  of $350.  This trip promises to be a really great training opportunity.  If you have questions about the plans for the Florida trip, talk to Coach Jeff.  You can pay by credit card or check, but those who use a credit card will be charged an additional 3% to cover the fee charged to the team by the credit card company. Check out the websites for the Sarasota Sharks and the Selby Aquatic Center.

SAVE THE DATE: SUNDAY, MARCH 15
Evergreen Season Finale Meet
We are hosting a meet on Sunday morning, March 15, as a capstone to the short course season.  Each family will have a volunteer assignment, as always.  If you already know you have a conflict, please contact Diane Belz at volunteers@evergreenswimteam.org. Please realize that if you don't show up to do your assigned job, we have to find someone at the last minute.

SUPER BOWL MEET RECAP

Kudos to all the Evergreen swimmers for a great job in the Super Bowl Meet.  Photos of the meet are posted on the Photo Gallery page of our team website. We cleared over $3000 on this meet - wow! Our home meets are the primary fund raising vehicle for the team - we couldn't be successful without the many volunteer hours
our members contribute. Many thanks to every family who worked to make this meet a success.  And, how about that Jamba Juice?!

Several of our kids received trophies for scoring in the top three in their age groups:  Maggie McDonald (3rd); Nick Delany (3rd); Kara Coughlin (1st); Katelyn Kenchel (2nd); Kaitlyn Honnick (3rd); Lindsay Morrow (1st); Josie Pearson (2nd); Tyler Slone (1st); Noah Christensen (2nd); Lexie Malazdrewicz (1st); Emily Stubenvoll (3rd); and Mitch Kilgore (1st).

EST COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
As part of the Evergreen Swim Team Financial Aid Program, the team has traditionally offered the opportunity for graduating seniors who have been committed Hurricanes swimmers to apply for a college scholarship. Any team member who is a graduating senior intending to continue his/her education, and who is a member in good standing with the swim team, can apply for a scholarship. The application deadline is April 1st.  All information can be found on the website under Financial Aid.

PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY!
